This is one of the final things I needed to finish for my new living room, and I’m so, so pleased! Would you mind horribly if I just gloat/revel for a moment over my new chairs?
These are a perfect example of how a little handiwork can save you some serious dollah billz. I snagged these chairs for $75 (for the pair) knowing that the shape was simple enough to sew a slip cover.
I took off the bottom skirt (it was just stapled on under the flap, just below the piping) and used an old sheet ($1) to trace all the pieces of fabric on the chair. Then I cut the pieces out and pinned them to the fabric. I pinned the pieces together around the chair as a sort of ‘fitting’ and then sewed along the lines I’d marked.
Et voila!!!
I wanted a heavy bright orange fabric. My plan was to pair the bright orange with some chocolate zebra print I’d seen at JoAnns. I found some bulk fabric online that looked somewhere between yellow and orange, and it was a good deal ($70 for 20 yards) so I bought it. Turned out to be more of a mustard yellow, but it still fits into the apartment scheme– I do wish it were heavier as I somehow bought broadcloth instead of duckcloth. You can see it wrinkles more easily than a heavier fabric might, but still!!
These puppies ended up costing around $70 apiece and I love them to death. Still planning to get a plant for that corner back there, so please excuse the bareness… Until then, a few more gratuitous pictures!
So excited! I just need some plants and lamps and I’ll be ready for folks to come visit! (If they haven’t already… that mirror was heavy, y’all.)
What do you think? Have you ever tried your hand at making slipcovers or uphostery? I’d love to know how it went!!
